Charlie Burton, Sr. – A Legacy of Strength, Faith, and Family

Charlie Burton, Sr. was the foundation of the Burton family as we know it today. Affectionately remembered as “Grandpa,” he was born in Missouri, though his birth date remains unknown. His journey was one of resilience, determination, and faith.

During his lifetime, he met and married Henrietta, our beloved “Grandma,” who was born in Virginia during slavery. Her birth date is also unknown. After gaining their freedom, they built a life together, raising four sons and four daughters: Charlie Jr., Edward, William, Archie, Miria, Nancy, Elizabeth, and Charlotte. The children were named after Grandpa’s relatives, though no known records exist of his family due to their forced separation during slavery.

Grandpa Charlie was a man of many talents. He was a skilled blacksmith and carpenter, capable of creating just about anything. His industrious nature and craftsmanship were evident in the blacksmith shop he managed in Port Barry, Louisiana. A testament to his resourcefulness, he even built a coffin, which was later used for his grandson Charlie.

Despite the hardships of slavery, Grandpa seized opportunities to learn. The slave master’s son, who was around the same age, secretly taught him to read and write. Grandpa then passed on this knowledge to other enslaved individuals, often teaching them to read the Bible by night. His faith was a source of strength, as he led others in prayer for deliverance and a better future.

His creativity extended beyond his trade. As a pipe smoker, he designed a long-stemmed pipe that allowed him to rest it in a saucer on his bedside table while smoking and napping—an innovation that reflected his ingenuity.

Grandpa Charlie and Grandma Henrietta spent many years in Port Barry, Louisiana, where they nurtured their family and built a lasting legacy. Grandpa lived to approximately 90 years old, while Grandma passed at 85, just one month after her beloved husband. They are both laid to rest in the yard of St. Peter’s Church in Port Barry, Louisiana.

Their story is one of strength, perseverance, and unwavering family values. As their descendants, we carry the torch of their legacy, ensuring that their sacrifices and traditions live on. The family that forgets its history risks its future. With the grace of God, the Burton family will continue to honor its heritage and fulfill its purpose for generations to come.

With love, faith, and unity, we honor Grandpa Charlie Burton, Sr.
